In 1989, the U.S. Congress enacted the Financial Institutions Reform, Recovery, and Enforcement Act (FIRREA), which authorized The Appraisal Foundation (Foundation) as the source of appraisal standards and appraiser qualifications.

The Appraiser Qualifications Board (AQB) of The Appraisal Foundation recently adopted revisions to the Real Property Appraiser Qualification Criteria. These changes, which become effective on May 1, 2018, will serve to reduce or eliminate unnecessary barriers to entry into the real estate appraisal profession in the US.

The Appraiser Qualifications Board of The Appraisal Foundation establishes the qualifications for real property appraisers in the United States. These qualifications can be found in the Real property Appraiser Qualification Criteria

To become a real property appraiser, candidates must obtain qualifying education hours, and, as applicable, obtain college-level education and experience hours, and successfully pass the National Uniform Licensing and Certification Examination. The following is a summary of changes to the Criteria effective May 1, 2018.
